The Surtees Society is dedicated to the publication of manuscripts illustrative of the history of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, principally of County Durham and Northumberland in North East England. The Society was founded in 1834 in honour of Robert Surtees of Mainsforth (1779-1834), the author of The History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham (1816-1840) and whose seal (right) is reproduced on the title page of each of the society’s volumes. Volumes continue to be published regularly, and new contributors are invited to contact the Secretary.
